DESCRIPTION: Hamilton Watch Co., Lancaster, Penn., a large, sterling silver cased torpedo boat watch, 36 size, 21 jewels, stem wind and pin set, adjusted to 5 positions, temperature and isochronism, damascened nickel plate movement with lever escapement, Guillaume balance, gold jewel settings and gold timing screws in a sterling silver, hinged back and bezel, plain polished open face case, arabic numeral, double sunk silvered metal dial with wind indicator, blued steel spade and poker hands, serial #1260092, 69mm, c1916.
CONDITION: CASE: Small flat spot, band; Scattered dings and pin pricks; Fine scratches on outer surface of case; Case back with polishing mop marks; Very fine scratches on inner surface of case; Inside of cuvette with two marks from ratchet wheel; Precious metal content marked. DIAL: A few areas of minor discoloration, otherwise very good. HANDS: Minor oxide, tip of minute. MOVEMENT PLATES: Fine marks and scratches on plate; A more significant scratch at ratchet wheel end of barrel bridge; Winding wheels with fine scratches; Intermediate winding wheel core with speck of oxide; One case screw with fine specks of oxide; One end of balance arm with minor oxide; Regulator with fine specks of oxide. MOVEMENT FUNCTION: Running order (winds, sets and ticks) . The Hamilton Watch Co. records indicate that the 36 size was produced in two configurations, a Ships Watch, which was gimbal mounted and boxed, and was wound and set with a key. The Patrol or Torpedo boat version was the stem wound and pin set version offered here. The serial number range for the 36 size timepiece was 1260001- 1260970, indicating a total production of 969 pieces, this example being the 91st in that sequence. Hamilton's records indicate that the movement was sent to the finishing department on March 19, 1916.
