DESCRIPTION: Raingo Freres and Henri Picard, Paris, a large and impressive gilt bronze mantel clock mounted with polychrome enamel Sevres style panels, the elongated base on short toupie feet, and set with a central oval panel within an ornate foliate frame depicting a two putti with basket of flowers between a pair of flanking music themed panels, each with an individual putto and various instruments, the clock case with a shaped panel below 6:00 with colorful birds and flowers, and at the top, a portrait of a girl with basket of flowers, within an oval, bowknot crested frame, the whole heavily festooned with acanthus and floral garlands, roman numeral white enamel dial with arabic outer five minute markers, gilt openwork hands, 8 day pendule de Paris movement with count wheel striking, dial and movement signed "Raingo Freres", case signed "H. Picard"
CONDITION: case dirty, but with much of the original gilding intact, some minor staining and verdigris, Sevres style panels very good, a portion of the floral ornament descending from left side of portrait missing, left rear foot replaced, dial with chips and losses, hands good, movement very dirty, ticks and strikes, pendulum replaced, bell missing. The firm of Raingo Freres, Paris, 1823- c1900, are well known for their exquisite clocks, bronzes, and furnishings. Henri Picard was an important bronzier and gilder, working in Paris between 1831- 84. Both firms provided luxury goods to the wealthy, and provided furnishings for the apartments of Napoleon III and his wife Empress Eugenie.
