Both trains of the movement show signs of life, but will need attention. Spinner for pendulum is missing. (2) Gesso and gilding losses around the upper molding of the base. Stamped brass trim pieces around the cage are coming loose. Velvet on top of base is dirty and worn. The bird and perch are absent. Nicely made, but unsigned movement is present in the base. The bellows and whistle are detached but also within the base. Bottom of wood base is stamped "France ". One foot is a replacement. Both items are for parts or restoration. Clocks- 2 (Two): Banjo: (1) Unknown, possibly E. Howard, Boston, banjo clock, 8 day, time only, weight driven movement in a mahogany gilt front case with painted metal dial reading "E. Howard & Co. / Boston / Reproduction of The Willard.", c1910. (2) Unknown, banjo clock, 8 day, time only, weight driven movement in a handmade mahogany case with dial signed by Foster Campos, c1990.
CONDITION:
(1) The case construction, particularly the head, is a bit awkward and not what we might expect of Howard. Evidence of glue and clamps indicate that it has had repairs by a non-professional. There is a "6" stamped into the wood of the backboard,a throat, box, and door frame. The signature on the dial seems to sit well above the rest of the paint and even some of the scratches, letting us know that it was applied when the dial already had some age. The dial otherwise seems good, though it has been touched up around the mounting screws. The signed movement comes from a Howard banjo no. 5 as indicated by the stamps. Two small wood piece below the movement do not look proper. Reverse painted glasses have some small losses and in-painted areas. Unfinished weight baffle behind the throat with "1908" written in pencil and black-painted baffle behind the pendulum. Damascened pendulum appears to be an authentic Howard. Finial is not correct shape, but is nicely turned from solid brass. (2) Good Foster Campos signed dial, but that is probably the only thing about the clock associated with him. The clock is in good condition with a thin finish. Modern, unsigned banjo movement. Evidence of glue and Phillips head screws inside the case. No weight. Dimensions are for the Howard (1).
