DESCRIPTION: Bally Manufacturing Co., Chicago, Illinois, "Bosco" coin-operated dice trade stimulator, 110v motor powering an enclosed platform that rotates three dice with reversible payout poster featuring with beer one side and cigarettes on the other, all housed in a wood box with glass top.
CONDITION: The black wood case is in good condition given that it spent a lot of time on the top of a bar. The key for the lock is absent, but is unlocked so the end of the box can be removed and coins can be retrieved. A small brass tag on the end of the box reads "A Bally Product ". The spinning platform has been refelted with modern adhesive-backed felt, the sides of which were pre-cut with circular shapes. These can sometimes catch and should be replaced. The original electric motor has been given a new wire and the original plug. Pulley belt inside is a modern piece of elastic cord. The poster is somewhat darkened and has some evidence of moisture stain. Overall it is fairly clean a readable. The three dice are old and probably original. The glass top has a crack in one corner and an old State of Virginia slot machine license dated 1941. To operate the machine, a nickel is dropped in the slot in the top. The coin completes the electrical circuit which starts the motor and the dice spinning. The wooden plunger on the front is then depressed fully. This pushes the coin out of the circuit and stops the motor. The resulting numbers on the dice determines the payout which are listed on the poster. Bally was an early innovator in the development of pinball machines, slot machines, and trade stimulators. The name lives on as a casino in Las Vegas.

CONDITION: The cast iron case is in very good condition except for a repair to the lower left section of the top surface. The red paint on lettering was not applied with care and is probably a later addition. The spring driven movement is wound with an integrated key on the right side of the unit. DESCRIPTION: S. Shaw, Lancashire, United Kingdom, "Mackenzie's Ink Polygraph", clockwork motor for the feed of paper tape and time interval marking, diaphragm receivers with and without leather straps, two ink pens, and other accessories, all in a fitted velvet-lined case with an ink polygraph recording on a paper roll dated 1918.
CONDITION: The leather covered case is deteriorating on the top. The inside of velvet-lined box is in good condition. The machine is not entirely complete as it is missing the bracket to hold the paper roll, and perhaps also some other accessories. Set comes with four recording diaphragms or "tambours" as Mackenzie called them. Small dried samples of the original rubber tubing are included. The included paper roll is presumably an actual polygraph recording taken by the machine and dated 1918. The machine was invented by the famous heart surgeon Sir James Mackenzie (1853-1925). In use, one diaphragm is placed over a vein in the neck and another over the wrist. Movements of the blood in these locations cause the diaphragms to vibrate. The vibrations were carried via rubber tubing to the long recording pens which were set to just barely touch a paper roll that was advanced by the spring driven motor. The clockwork mechanism is still capable of performing its two functions: turning the paper feed roller and impulsing the time-marking pen on one the end of the unit. This early polygraph was one of the first that could display heart irregularities in a visual manner. They were also used as lie detectors. Dimensions are for the carrying case.

Five coins are included.
CONDITION: Black enameled case has some dings and scratches to the finish. Paper dial appears original with some surface abrasion. Original hands. Balance wheel movement will need service. DESCRIPTION: Espy Curtis & Co, Chicago, Illinois, "Curtis Egg Timer" cooking device, two spring driven timers with verge and foliot escapements, copper water vessel, two movement stands, and two egg cooking pans to accommodate six eggs total.
CONDITION: The unit is in very original condition. The movements both show signs of life, but probably need some cleaning and oiling. Nice raised lettering on the movement cases showing instructions and the company name. The hooks at the top of the posts are pulled up to the specified number, which indicates minutes. The eggs were placed in the pans and then lowered to the full length of the attached chains into the tub of boiling water. This set the timers -- complete with egg-shaped regulating weights at the end of the foliot arms -- into motion. At the end of the specified time, the chains suddenly pull the pans from the water to stop the eggs from cooking any longer. These were reportedly used in hotel rooms in conjunction with a hot plate.

CONDITION: Metal bases have oxidized surfaces. Four of the five base units will run when wound. The fifth unit may have a detached mainspring.
