DESCRIPTION: Japy Frères & Cie, Paris, figural mantel clock, 8 day, time and strike, spring driven pendule de Paris movement in an elaborate gilt metal case surmounted by a warrior leaning on an ax, a saber behind him, and a brace of pistols between his feet, 3 inch white enamel dial, and blued steel Breguet style hands.
CONDITION: cast case is in very good condition. The gilding is excellent, complete with burnished highlights. The clock has no front bezel or rear door because it once lived under a glass dome. The white enamel dial is excellent but for a hairline on the left side and a faint line radiating from the center arbor hole. The slightly awkward orientation of the hand on the ax and completely burnished ax handle may indicate a replaced part or simply a questionable artistic choice. Original steel hands. Signed Japy movement strikes on a bell and bears the "Grande Med d’Honneur" award. Movement is oily. The warrior -- probably a marine or pirate as indicated by the anchors on his jacket -- is particularly well represented.

DESCRIPTION: Warren Telechron Co., Ashland, Mass., "Warren B. Master Clock", (No. 127 Frequency Clock) in an oak case with silvered dial, 110v motor combined with quality spring movement. Spring movement moves the center hand backwards; electric movement moves it forward, serial #1036
CONDITION: the case has been refinished and there is dent of the bottom of bezel. The dial is in excellent condition. If the power company is producing 60 cycles per second, and the clock movement is wound and running, the large hand stays up on zero. The console operator at a power station is able to increase or decrease his cycle output to keep the hand on zero. Henry warren's invention and application of this concept was revolutionary, and initially not well received.....most power companies asked 'Who cares about accurate time?' However by 1925 most operators had realized that by standardizing their output, they could not only tout the use of 110v electric clocks, but could sell or share their power with neighboring companies without fear of a current conflict. For additional info, see NAWCC Bulletin from 1991, 33, pg 374-395, article titled "Henry warren and His Master Clocks. "
