CONDITION: this is a one-family clock and belonged to a smoker so the original dial has turned a bit yellow. The clock is otherwise in excellent original condition with attractive rosewood veneer retaining nice finish, good original pendulum, beat scale, hands, and gilt counter framing around the door. Inside black and gold label has faded some, but still legible. A very nice example of the World.

Calendar dial is properly painted replacement. Period calendar mechanism is proper. but from another clock, as the mounting is different than original.. Someone with some skill could adapt the calendar mounting to the case to make a nice and unusual calendar clock more correct.

The case has a proper movement and dial, but the backboard has the label of Orten, Preston & Co., but was fitted into this case from a later clock as that firm worked too late to make pillar & scroll clocks. Tablet and finials are proper style replacements. In spite of problems, it presents well.

CONDITION: The cast iron case is in nice condition. There is some paint loss and touch up on the case but the strength of the colors overall is very good. The bezel and paper dial are of a later period. The hour hand is newer while the minute hand is old. The movement does run for a period and activates the eyes.

CONDITION: the case has a bit of a lean as if it has compressed by a small amount on the right side. The case retains its gilding, though it is worn in a few high spots. Enamel dial is fine as are hands. Open back and lack of front glass are normal as this was once under a dome. Evidence of excess glue at the seams on the back side of clock. Movement ticks and strikes but was not tested comprehensively.

CONDITION: either the faux grain or veneer have been stripped off this clock, and now with shellac over the pine. The original [cracked] tablet of Washington is included in the lot, and the tablet in the door has been nicely painted to match the original. With super inside label. This is an uncommon clock that came out of an old timer's collection. Zoom into photo to see how well the ripple has been inlaid into the moldings.

Based on the door latches these could both be timepieces made by Horace Tifft.
CONDITION: (1) Mahogany and mahogany veneered case in an original finish has a couple small corner chips. Original painted dial has some paint loss at the mounting pins and clear varnish overcoat. Original bottom tablet has lifting of the background and old repairs. The throat glass is a replacement. The wood sidearms and dial bezel have repairs. Top plinth looks to be a replacement; (2) Mahogany and mahogany veneered case in an old and possibly original finish. The veneer on the doors is fine except for a veneer repair on the throat. The period dial has some paint loss at 1 o'clock and may or may not be original to the case as there are extra holes in the head. Replaced minute hand. Throat tablet is a replacement. The bottom tablet looks to be original. The case has repair at the bottom door hinge and the bottom case sides from damage to the bottom board. Brass sidearms are thick and maybe a later addition as these clock cases are not usually found with brass sidearms. Dial door has a repair at the hinge and a shrinkage crack.

CONDITION: (1) Refinished mahogany veneered case has a little damage to the veneer at the door lock and some finial tip damage. Original painted dial is slightly soiled with some loss at the mounting screw and small scattered loss. Original hands, tablet and brass springs. Clean label inside. Part of the lock, key escutcheon and pendulum are missing; (2) Refinished rosewood veneered case has some repairs on the front molding, small piece missing on the back edge and small area of loss on the door bottom The round door has age cracks in the veneer. Original painted dial has loss at the mounting scews and at the winding arbors. Door lock is missing. Label inside was varnished at one time and is now dark but readable. Original tablet and brass springs.

CONDITION: (1) Refinished mahogany and gilt frame case has loss to the gilding and spotty gold painted to cover defects. One of the rope moldings is missing on the bottom door left side. Tablets are not original. Original sheet metal dial has scattered paint loss. Dial is attached to the head with three L-turns. One of the sidearms has a couple diamonds missing and a repair. Brass movement based on a design by A. Willard, Jr., is attached to the case with through bolts. Original bell and mounting stand. Original hour and minute hands. Alarm setting hand is brass, but maybe original. The lever on the movement front plate to activate the alarm is missing; (2) Mahogany and gilt frame case has loss to the gilding on the throat frame and the bottom bracket. Both tablets are replaced. Original dial looks to have had the numbers relined. Period hands. The bezel has been shifted from its original position.

DESCRIPTION: Clocks- 2 (Two): (1) Seth Thomas Clock Co., Thomaston, Conn., "18 Inch Gallery" hanging clock with a spring driven, 8 day, time and strike (large cathedral gong) movement in a solid oak case, c1900; (2) E. N. Welch Mfg. Co., Forestville, Conn. unidentified hanging clock with a spring driven double wind timepiece movement (possibly 30 day) in a darkly stained wood case, c1900. Note: The larger dimensions are for clock number 2.
CONDITION: (1) The solid oak case appears to have been refinished some time ago. The time and strike movement is very unusual for a gallery clock but appears to be original to the case. The hands and door glass are both original. The original painted dial, signed Seth Thomas and also bearing the name "Waterbury" has flaking issues around the numerals 5 and 6; (2) The darkly stained case has very little, if any, finish remaining. The movement is very similar to that used in the number 11 and 12 hanging regulators, except with a short (12 inch) pendulum length, The painted dial has been covered over with a finish and the dial shows some discoloration. The hands appear to be original. The movement is signed. The door glass is original. There are two posts on the case back above the movement that suggest a wired connection to the movement.

CONDITION: (1) Mahogany case in original finish has repairs to the bottom board and extra screws at the throat sides to the hold the weight guide. Both tablets are replaced. Original painted dial has soiled areas and stains and some loss at the mounting pins. Nice engraved pendulum. Original hands. Movement mounted to the case with a center screw through the backboard. Unusual finial looks old, perhaps original. They were clockmakers at 63 Congress Street, Boston; (2) Model five Howard type timepiece in original grain painted cherry case in original finish has some scratches on the throat door and some damage on the bottom of the throat door. The bottom tablet looks original, while the throat glass is a replacement. Painted dial has loss at the mounting screws and some soiled areas. The dial looks to be original, but there are extra holes in the head. Hands are period and look original. Weight baffle is a replacement as there are slots cut into the throat sides for a longer weight baffle. Pendulum rod is replaced.

CONDITION: (1) Mahogany and mahogany veneered case in an old finish has veneer repairs on the bottom door and repairs on throat. Bottom bracket is a later made addition. Both tablets are modern replacements. Period iron dial has loss near the winding arbor and at the mounting pins. It appears to be original, but there are extra holes in the head. Replaced hands. The sidearms are missing; (2) Refinished mahogany and gilt case has some loss on the bottom bracket and and acorn drop. Both tablets are replacements. The period dial has some damage at the signature and someone has damaged it by drilling four screw holes. The dial is probably not original to this clock as there are slots in the dial for an L-turns that are not in the clock head. Finial is not original and too small. Plinth for the finial is a replacement.

CONDITION: (1) The case retains its dark original finish. There is some veneer loss along the base. The painted dial has loss in the lower right corner. The hands are period but mismatched. The door tablets are both original with minor loss. The lower shows P. T. Barnum's Villa Iranstan" which was destroyed by fire in 1854 while the other shows Ballston Springs; (2) The case has some original finish which is sparse in areas. The painted dial has darkened with age. The hands are replacements. The door glass gilt designs are in good condition but have lost some of their black backing. ***NOTES*** The dimensions are for clock number one.

CONDITION: overall these three clocks shown signs of good care and are ready to enjoy. The Ansonia is in very good original condition, with super dial, original peacock tablet and nicely crazed finish, & good label on rear of case.. The Gilbert is also in great condition with original glass [see book], pressed glass pendulum, dial and hands. The Chicago has lost a little of the gold leaf from its columns and there is some crazing and loss of finish, but still overall a nice example of this model, with superior inside label.

A drive shaft extends upward from the movement to turn the armed wheel. Counterweights on the each of the 8 sets of motion works cause the time to advance on the small dials; (3) Ansonia Clock Co., New York, " Rouen" 8 day, time and strike, spring driven mantel clock in a grain painted iron case, c1894.
CONDITION: (1) missing pieces of case molding and feet. Case, veneer, inlay, bellow, and movement will all need restoration; (2) Some of the grain painting has rubbed off of the case. Gilding on spelter ornaments is gone in places. Pendulum is missing. Movement will need to be serviced; (3) Bezel and glass are missing. Original paint is missing in places and very cracked elsewhere. Dark spots on small dials. Some loss to textured base. Pendulum is a replacement.
