DESCRIPTION: English mahogany barrel form 8 day, fusee spring brass movement wall clock or timepiece, c1815 The dial is signed "Smart", who might possibly be Benjamin Smart a London clockmaker who worked from 1797-1818 located at 35 Firth Street. The two "ears" would suggest that this timepiece may have been built into some larger structure. There are three holes in the case at the six o'clock position that would suggest this timepiece was mounted onto a stand with three pins.

DESCRIPTION: German, Lenzkirch, immense and ornate "Freischwinger" or free-swinger with pendulum open in bottom section, serial #824349, c1885
CONDITION: this clock is a Lenzkirch collectors dream. Was imported to the US in 1968 and has been in storage since. Both case and movement are dirty. Note movement mounting sets up on a block to bring dial flush with the door. Sometimes this indicates a marriage, but in this case it was done because of the extra deep case; there is no evidence of tampering. Not immediately evident in the movement are the dozens of decorative bronze castings, since they have all turned dark brown. In spite of having 3 major references on Lenzkirch, we could not find this exact case in a book (send us an email if you know the model) Charts of serial numbers vary quite a bit, but we can safely say that this is 4th quarter of 1800s. Thumbscrews for movement mount are lacking. Some nicks and scrapes to case commensurate with its age. With the many turnings and finial tips in bronze, this is a very heavy clock. We recommend blanket wrap delivery. Ht 52"

DESCRIPTION: French picture clock, oil on canvas, 8 day time and strike movement by Chaumont, Paris, with 4-tune music box, c1880
CONDITION: this is a better-than-average example, with the clock face showing in the scene's church steeple. The unsigned painting portrays a riverside village with a fisherman, etc., and has been nicely repaired long ago with a few patches on the reverse side. The signed thread-suspension movement strikes on a gong and also actuates the very nice sounding large music box mounted above which has selector switches accessed through a brass plate on the side of the case. One sticker lists the four tunes; the smaller round one advertises a clockmaker in Brugge. We were able to produce a slow melody, but service will be needed on both movements, and their linkages. The frame has its gilding mostly intact, and measures 22" x 27"

DESCRIPTION: Swiss, with French spring wound pendulum movement, castle style automaton, with monkey appearing as a conductor, moving his arm to indicate the striking of the gong; c1875
CONDITION: this clock was most likely carved in the Interlaken area, a region well known for carved cases, both figural and architectural. The exterior of the case is incised to simulate brick, the top cut to simulate shingles and the dial flanked by Corinthian columns with gilt metal trimmings. The steeple does separate from the main case for service of the "monkey linkage". There are some missing bits of brass trim and some nicks and scrapes to the case; front panel with dry split, all commensurate with its' age. The well made French time and strike movement goes for 8+ days; although it ticks and tries to strike, it would benefit from service. The gilt dial with cartouche numerals is exceptional and very clean. The linkage to the monkey's arm, with counterweight, needs adjusting. Overall an interesting clock for the novelty collector. DESCRIPTION: Austrian Gebruder Resch, 3-weight grand sonnerie wall clock, extra large, with profuse carvings and extra moldings, serial #100000--66384, dial with retailers name = Johann Greiner, Graz, c1880
CONDITION: overall excellent condition. all numbers match on mounting bracket movement and pendulum. Note that this case is extra deep, and a one inch block is used to space the movement out from the back board, however there is no bracket of later tampering. Pattern on weights, pendulum and dial is etched in, not engraved, and the scrolling pattern on pendulum and weights does not quite match the leafy pattern on the dial center. The case features a large dentil treatment above dial, and a well pendulum female bust at top. Dial is flanked by two full round and reeded columns, and surrounded by a deeply carved bezel, the lower pendulum of this double door design with well detailed pilasters. Very heavy door is held in place by pendulum robust lock and original key. This one of a kind case was likely commissioned to match a set of dining room furniture. DESCRIPTION: Japanese, double foliot lantern clock, large, "Nicho Tenpu Yagura-dokei", 30 hour, steel framed movement with tooled brass covers, now on a purpose made wall bracket and with later weights
CONDITION: although the wall bracket and weights are modern, the clock itself is otherwise c1790 and in very good original condition. Small dent in dial. Larger lanterns like this [16" ht] often occur on a floor base, which may be a simple trapezoid paneled affair, or open with delicate curved legs. For centuries, the japanese divided the day into 6 daylight hours and 6 night time hours, and their clocks designed to vary the length of each hour to correspond with the daylight offered by the sun. The work day and study day were thus longer in the summer and shorter in the winter. Levers within the movement rise to change from the small foliot to the large foliot, and every few days the little weights on the foliot are adjusted manually outward or inward to change the length of the hours. Small alarm weight and rope are lacking. From the collection of the late Rose Brandt.

DESCRIPTION: Self Winding Clock Co., New York, "No. 18-A" stained birch time only electrically wound wall clock, c1910
CONDITION: the original surface retains a smooth glossy patina with just a few minor scratches, and the glasses are old. The polished metal dial is pristine, and company labels and plates remain inside at the top and bottom. There also is a top-mounted bell. The heavy pendulum is nickel-plated with a few small dents, but is too short for this "Style F Synchronized Movement" which should swing an 80-beat pendulum about 5" longer. (A new stick could be fabricated with the existing pendulum hardware.) There are no dry-cell batteries included, and the movement was not tested. Ht 41"
ESTIMATE: $700 - $1000
