He served in the 13th Regiment, New York National Guard from 1877 to at least 1886. The New York Times reported on Tuesday, May 23, 1908: "Major J. Fred Ackerman, President of the Perkins-Goodwin Company, paper commission merchants of this city, died late Thursday evening at his country home, Belle Haven, Greenwich, Conn. Joseph became a lawyer and had his own office at Pittsburgh, PA by 1900. He was appointed to the state Superior Court in 1931 by 1932 he was a Judge of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. He was twice president of the Allegheny County Bar Association and Vice-President of the Pennsylvania Bar Association. He collapsed and died while walking on Broad Street, Philadelphia during a visit or business on Dec13, 1943, age 82.
