DESCRIPTION: Aaron Miller, Elizabethtown, N.J. tall clock, 8 day, time and bell strike, weight driven movement with typical Miller wooden winding drums, arch cutout to lower section and clipped upper left corner of plates in gumwood case [stained cherry color] with with brass dial, cast brass spandrels and silvered chapter ring, date aperture above 6 and disc with maker's signature in the arch, c1750
CONDITION: the case has been refinished, there has been some restoration to the hood and trunk door and the bottom feet have been replaced. The plinths, finials and hood door glasses are replacements. The hinges and weights are old but replacements. Spittler & Bailey's "Clockmakers & Watchmakers of America" lists Miller as hailing from Elizabethtown, N.J. c1747 and advertising in N.Y. city as a maker of clocks in the best manner as well as a fabricator of compasses, chains for surveyors and church bells of any size. Virtually all of the known Miller clock cases are made of gumwood. Ht 92"

CONDITION: this clock is in excellent original condition and has been recently serviced in 2008 [including weight polish/ lacquer]. It would make a impressive piece in buyer's front hall. CONDITION: the clock is in excellent original condition with a shrinkage split in front base skirt and left side of fretwork split at the top with a small piece of veneer absent and right side missing small portion of fretwork. There is an excellent label for Bailey, Banks & Biddle, Philadelphia, PA on inside of trunk door. As explained in the BBB label, the movement is an old English one, restored for the Stennes case. DESCRIPTION: English, triple fusee movement, quarter chiming on choice of 8-bells or 5 tubular bells, now in a well constructed case of the same period, with hand carved decorations, purpose made to fit in a room corner of a home near Bath, all parts, c1910, the dial signed W. W. Kemp & Co., Bristol.
CONDITION: this is a lot of quality raw material for a collector to use to re-create a conventional clock, or could still be used in a corner application. Note rear edge of case is mitred at 45 degrees, plus has cutouts for the lower wall molding. The workman who fit the movement into the case did not do a stellar job with the seat board and this one needs reworking or a new one making. the movement itself is of very high quality and the octave of bells in good tune, and the pendulum and tubes original. The composite dial is well made with cast spandrels and subsidiary dials for "Chime-Silent" and for "Chime on 8 Bells / Westminster". Overall Ht 80"

CONDITION: the case has been refinished with replaced arch and lower right molding on hood, replaced top dust cover (with modern paneling) and some inlay absent on upper right and left corners of hood door. There is a 1 3/4" strip on veneer missing on hood door and some veneer loss to right front foot. The cove molding on right hand side of trunk is loose and there is a small crack on left side of base and left front foot. The movement and dial are not original to the case but fit well. The pendulum is a replacement. Horace Richmond is listed in Spittler and Bailey's "Clockmakers & Watchmakers of America" as a silversmith by trade and a known tall clock movement. DESCRIPTION: Dial signed: Joseph Fordham, Braintree, England tall clock, 30 hour, time and bell strike, one weight driven movement with endless rope winding, now in a Bombay style highly figured crotch walnut veneer case with heavy walnut banding around trunk exterior and base. The one handed brass dial signed "Jos. Fordham Braintree" has applied brass corner spandrels and English crown and cherub spandrel in arch, c1730
CONDITION: someone has done a good job of adapting this English movement to an old Continental case. The brass dial plate is recent, cut to fit shape of hood, and the original spandrels, chapter and hands added, with crown cut off 4 of the spandrels. This style English birdcage movement always had a square dial with 4 corner spandrels. The case has been refinished and has minor veneer loss at top and bottom left ears of the hood, side front round molding on the trunk and others. There has been some veneer replaced elsewhere. The glass in the hood door is absent. The movement has been recently serviced and with pendulum present but disconnected due to stripped threads. Ht 85 1/2"

CONDITION: the case has a nice old finish with a repair to the top rear left and middle right of the hood. The upper rear left side of trunk was restored and the feet and bottom board are replacements. The dial is in good condition with the exception of one dial foot absent at upper left and a couple of small flakes. The movement has a replaced seat board and replaced risers and needs service. CONDITION: the case, which predates the movement by approx 50 years [c.1730] retains its original finish with a plain black base that may be a later restoration [seems too small for upper portion of case], also a repair to the thumbnail on the upper right dial frame. There are holes for three finials that are absent. The dial has significant wear to the chapter ring with ornately engraved vines on inner section and floral engraving around winding arbor. The pendulum is a replacement. New wood under the seatboard gives evidence to the marriage of case and mov't. Rob't Welsh started work in 1768. Ht 86 1/2"

The brass arched dial has a silvered chapter ring with applied brass numerals, surrounded by a finely engraved foliate mask, turned spandrels and dial center, moon phase, selection for chime or silent, and second's bit, c1905
CONDITION: the case is in excellent original condition with original finish and minor chip on top left molding of hood. The dial has 30% silver loss and some tarnishing on chapter ring and 35% paint loss on moon phase disc depicting Scottish castle and sailboat. The robust movement is dirty and needs to be cleaned. It is likely that Tiffany contracted with a NY case maker who acquired the movement and tubes from Durfee in Providence Dial is signed Tiffany & Co. on a silvered brass cartouche above the numeral 6. Ht 93 1/2"

Durfee, Providence, Rhode Island, for Bailey, Banks & Biddle, Philadelphia, Penn. on dial, 9 tube hall clock, 8 day, time, strike and 1/4 chime three weight driven movement playing Westminster or Whittington tune on tubes signed by Walter Durfee with patent date 1887 and with single jar mercury pendulum. The silvered brass dial has moon phase with elk scene, strike / silent and tune selector discs. The case is oak with a dark walnut finish and has carved cornice moldings, 11 raised panels, barley twist columns, of which four are flanking the trunk and two are flanking hood, sunburst carving above trunk door and beveled glass in hood and trunk doors. There are exceptional lion's head escutcheons on both hood and trunk doors, c1895
CONDITION: the case as you see it, is in excellent condition with original finish, except hood is now missing its broken arch crest and 3 finials, now replaced with a plain flat board, stained dark. The clock had to fit into a 7' 6" room and these bits were sacrificed. The silk backing is shredded and needs replacement. Carved claw feet are absent. The moon phase is in excellent condition with a wonderful depiction of elk and schooner and no flaking. Several tube strings and the cable on the strike train need to be replaced. Mercury has been removed and must be hand delivered. The movement is dirty but when tension was applied to all three trains they were turning free. Ht as shown 88" would finish to around 98" if you have restoration skills.

DESCRIPTION: German, Tisch Uhr or table clock by cWilhelm Heilmann, Altenburg, time and bell strike in a gilt brass case, verge & balance escapement, and with original travel case, C1800
CONDITION: although from central Germany, not far from Dresden, this clock shows a lot of Augsburg influence. Unlike earlier versions in which the case would have been all of cast components, this one has a thinner round body formed round a mandrel and silver soldered at the seam, then engraved and gilded. The engraving on the bottom plate and cock is very fine, the base of the clock showing a grinning gargoyle. This clock came to us from a family in Virginia and has been in one place for the past 80 years or so, and has never been offered through the trade. Engraved and silvered dial with Roman numerals along an inside hour track, and with Arabic minute markers every 5 minutes along the outer minute ring. There is some dry brass cleaner on the case don't cringe], applied by someone recently who wanted the case to look nicer. It is ticking robustly. Overall excellent original condition.
