DESCRIPTION: An uncommon, large 2-weight Anglo-American wall "Regulator", 8 day, time only, two weight driven Welch movement in mahogany and fruitwood case with black flocking on backboard bordered by gold leaf trim and painted metal dial, c1875
CONDITION: this timepiece is in good original condition overall with some inlay absent from dial surround. The original dial has inpaint around center shaft and numeral "1" and the "WELCH SPRING FORESTVILLE CONNECTICUT" signature has been partially rubbed off. The movement appears to be the same as Welch used in the "No. 2 Regulator" with exception of the bridge work for the verge, which is similar to the bridge work for the "No. 5" or "No. 6 Regulator". Although more formal in style that the traditional Anglo-American spring clocks, this offers evidence that American movements were being cased up in England through the 3rd quarter of the 19th Century. DESCRIPTION: Seth Thomas Clock Co, "REGULATOR No. 16" in a walnut case c1885, with a Seth Thomas movement, later converted to Gerry Gravity Escapement, weight driven, week duration.
CONDITION: the case on this clock is among the nicest we have ever seen, never refinished and beautifully aged with a fine crackle that has naturally oxidized. On the bottom bracket, the veneer has split at a base joint, and a couple of small chips there. Small chip on carved shell crest at top. Door latch hasp will need repair. Overall the black walnut has an attractive grain and the case is as nice in person as the photos reflect. The movement will require some additional attention. Note there are a few holes in the front plate where a side-cock was removed to make way for this rare modified escapement. The pendulum stick has been replaced and has a replaced hanger at the top. Currently requires a keystone to support the pendulum.
