R. Holt & Cie, Paris, France miniature skeleton clock for the English market, 8 day, time and alarm, spring driven movement introduced at the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, signed on the dial and movement. Includes original glass dome on ebonized base, c1860

complete and in excellent original condition with pull string alarm. There are no hairlines in the white enamel dial. The base is stamped "Ms. Honorables, Exp. Paris, Londres", and the back plate with the initial "P". Details on this clock can be found in Derek Robert's book "Continental and American Skeleton Clocks", pages 102-3, wherein his research shows that although these were introduced at the Great Exhibition of 1851, and are commonly identified by that reference, they were actually produced from 1850 through the 1890s. this early posted movement has its striking train behind the time train, and a rear count wheel The continuous chain has its lead donut counterweight and pulley, but no weight and no pendulum. The top mount bell is old, and the engraved brass dial with listed maker name is in nice condition. The wood seatboard is modern. The movement, with anchor escapement, appears complete and will function, but not tested with weight and pendulum. The single steel hour hand is old. Tregoe worked at Great Marlow from c1769-1798. This movement early in his career, c1770. Dial is 9" square.

Henry was the son of Aaron Willard, Sr., and half brother to Aaron Willard, Jr. He was trained as a cabinetmaker and provided cases to the Willards and others, c1825.

there are some small wood losses on the large round turned bezel; there are places where the finish is rubbed through to the veneer. The dial pan has been cut out at the center to show the movement (this was not done at the factory), and has been repainted with the name "Joseph Ives" who invented the movement type, but had nothing to do with making this clock.
