DESCRIPTION: Chelsea for Ball Watch Co., Cleveland, large weight regulator, model 2Q, in an oak case of mostly solid oak, similar in style to the Seth Thomas #3, serial #163538, c1924, with Graham's dead beat escapement and maintaining power, from the Wasserman collection.
CONDITION: other than a new set of hands and a small ding in the pendulum bob, this clock is otherwise in excellent original condition (see note on hands below}. All of Ball Watch Co timekeepers, watches and clocks, were produced under contract to their strict standards. The movement chart in the rear of Demeter's book on Chelsea, pages 248-249, gives production details. Note the following: first order was on 10/24/24: 20 2Q clocks ordered by Ball. Second order placed on 12/05/24, 10 more 2Qs; then 12/24/24 90 more 2Qs. Last order was 11/18/26 for 100 2Qs. Total 2Qs appears to be 220 made for Webb C. Ball, We have seen this model bring as high as $5000. Bob Wasserman purchased this clock carefully. You can compare it to one sold by Chester Hicks a couple of years ago on his website, with slightly different grain pattern to the oak. Interestingly, In filling the contract, Chelsea patterned not only the case, but also the movement after the ST#3, but with their typical quality refinements and spoked hour wheel. {Note that Seth Thomas also supplied their #3 to Ball, see "Railroad Timekeeping" NAWCC, Chicagoland chapter, available used} This movement is clearly signed Chelsea Clock Co., Boston, U.S.A., and with serial number shown above. The case on this clock is about 50% heavier than the veneered ST case. Movement is clean and in good running order. Orig Chelsea beat scale intact. Note we sold one of these on May 1, 2009, for $4400. The only Chelsea weight clock rarer than this is the No. 5. Also included in the case is a spare set of Chelsea spade hands that Bob had bought for the clock, but the hour hub needs to be broached out a bit to fit. Ht 44"

DESCRIPTION: E. Howard & Co., Boston, "REGULATOR No. 72", for the Santa Fe Railway, La Junta, Colorado station, in walnut, 8 day weight, and with original Santa Fe maintenance sticker behind the dial plate, c1890.
CONDITION: inside the top left of the case is ATSF Form 1649 indicating this clock was used and maintained at La Junta. Very legible record indicates the clock was cleaned by F. H. Barnes on December 2, 1937, and that it was hung in the office of the Asst Mgr and Mgr at La Junta. There are two other form 1649s underneath the top one, however it appears impossible to separate them. The dial of this clock has been repainted, and the metal dial plate [not the wooden mask] appears to have been replaced many years ago by the Railway, as it is not perfectly round and looks to have been cut with tin snips; regardless it has been there a long time and the holes align perfectly. There is a small area of brass showing through the nickel plating on the damascene pendulum. The case is immaculate, and note the maintenance record shows the case was "cleaned and polished"; the original finish is superior. The Santa Fe logo on the glass has been re-done professionally with gold leaf. High quality Howard movement is complete and sound; is running briskly but could stand a clean and oiling. Large iron weight has cast in "1" and is original; old crank with spinning handle. This item is sure to appeal to the Railway crowd as well as the clock collector. Ht 65"

DESCRIPTION: Howard & Davis, Boston, "No. 1 BANJO", in a rosewood grained over cherry case, and with large trapezoid movement with maintaining power, Geneva stop and seconds hand. From the Wasserman collection, c1850
CONDITION: the painted metal dial has been re-blacked over the original Arabic numerals [a special request, as 99% of these dials had Roman numerals]. There is some loss to the original crazed base dial paint, notably around the winding holes and especially at 10 o'clock. The original movement is clearly signed Howard & Davis, Boston, is complete and sound, held into the case with tabs at the rear plate. The heavy suspension bridge that spans both plates to hold the pendulum is intact. Diamond time hands and seconds hand are original. The gilt pendulum stick is original, and the bob retains its original brushed pattern [careful not to polish it off]. The rosewood graining on the case is especially nice with lively appearance. Best part is the original tablets that are nicely crazed and have received NO restoration. Pendulum hold down tab is present, just was off during photo Weight and bob have been removed from the clock for ease of transport. Ht 50"

CONDITION: except for a dry split at the top of the door, a couple of perimeter holes in case back where screws secured the clock to the wall, and a replaced door glass, this clock is otherwise in outstanding original condition. The quarter sawn oak veneered panel in the case back and the tapered base show one of the liveliest & most attractive grain patterns we have seen. The original slightly crazed finish has been rubbed and waxed and is a wonderful golden color. Dial is original and outstanding. Retains good original weight with knurled ends and pulley. Has large & proper iron bracket with heavy "saddle" for holding the mercury pendulum; original fading gold paint on bracket. The movement has been professionally cleaned and re-strung and is in good running order; note this movement with optional jeweled pallets (shown in detail photo) Perhaps the nicest oak #19 we have had the pleasure of selling. DESCRIPTION: Seth Thomas Clock Co., Thomaston, Conn, "REGULATOR No. 19", in walnut with burled appliques, wall regulator with 2- jar compensating pendulum, weight driven and with center seconds hand, c1885
CONDITION: another fine clock from Milanville, PA. photo shows the clock hanging in the Wasserman home. For a truer image of the rich color of this clock, see the close up of the top and bottom. To minimize flash back, we took the main image from the left and lost a bit of detail. Like most of the clocks, Bob W. acquired this one with a lightly crazed finish and he rubbed and waxed it with a minimum of loss to the finish. Stated briefly, the clock is in outstanding original condition and sure to please the most discriminating collector. Nickel finish on dial bezel, weight and pulley are intact. Original dial with only minor losses near 12 and 6 from setting the hands. Additional details on the #19 may be found in Tran Duy Ly's book on Seth Thomas, 3rd Edition, pages 301--303. Movement is running briskly and is generally clean, however some of the oil has congealed and it would benefit from disassembly, wipe pivots, reassemble and oil. Movement is numbered 293. This earlier case has tulip pattern carving on the door. Heavy iron movement bracket has been painted black; has proper wide saddle for mercury pendulum. Original door glass is wavy with imperfections. Ht 75"

CONDITION: this is one of the nicest #18 models a collector could hope to find. There are some small flakes on the original dial, especially at the attaching holes. The clock is otherwise in excellent original condition. Note this model uses an upgraded version of the famous No. 2 mov't, with a larger winding barrel and a 30 tooth 'escape wheel to indicate true seconds on the dial. Retains a good label in the case bottom. Although the clock is running, the oil has congealed around a couple of pivots and movement could stand a cleaning. See Tran Ly's book on Seth Thomas, 3rd Edition, pages 316 and 317 for detailed photos and information. This model with No. 68 movement with jeweled pallets. From the Bob Wasserman collection. Walnut case with burled accents. c1890
CONDITION: this was a limited production item, and Seth Thomas Clock Company experimented with a couple of movements. This case shows the witness outline and 4-holes for a larger iron bracket, but not the trapezoidal bracket in Mike Lowe's clock, rather a 3rd pattern with rounded corners (see detail photos on website). The movement & bracket in this Wasserman clock are identical to the ones shown on page 316 of Ly's Seth Thomas book. Bob was aware of the condition, but enjoyed the clock as one of the rarest Ball models known. The walnut case itself is in outstanding condition with original finish intact, nicely waxed. DESCRIPTION: Seth Thomas, for Ball Watch Co., Cleveland, O., "REGULATOR No. 3" in oak, quality weight driven timepiece, 8 day, c1890
CONDITION: typical of Bob Wasserman's clocks, this is overall in excellent original condition; see leafy beige wall paper surrounding clock in Wassernan house. The finish has been nicely rubbed and waxed; there is no open grain. The golden color is so rich it is difficult to get a good photo of it; you really need to see it in person to appreciate it. The original dial has some flakes at the attaching points and wear to the numerals, especially 3 - 4 & 5, from setting the time. As you can see in the detail photo long ago, perhaps the factory added corbels for additional support of the case back to the case sides. This is not the first of these we have found; see Tran Ly's book on Seth Thomas (1996), page 113 for identical reinforcement; note too that the clock is also for Ball, but dial worn at 8 - 9 & 10. The movement has been cleaned, serviced and is running. The original Ball signature is good, with minor wear and a scratch. The brass bob and weight are original, the weight has knurled top and bottom and long hook. Original beat scale intact. The black Seth Thomas label in the case bottom is original and in fair condition, having suffered from pendulum, wt and key scuffs and tears. Ht 42"
