AUCTION : 0519

Lot#: 417

DESCRIPTION: Gebrüder Junghans, Schramberg, Germany, dolphin swinging mystery clock, 8 day, time only spring driven brass movement with compound pendulum, gilt cast case, arabic numeral white enamel dial, and blued steel hands, all held aloft by the tail of a gilt cast spelter dolphin statuette on a turned ebonized wood stand.
CONDITION: The old cast spelter figure is in good condition. Gold paint has been applied over the original gilding, filling the deep sections of relief. The threaded end has been soldered onto the jewel arm, which is not of the common Junghans type. There is a repaired split in the wood base. The movement is unsigned but has the other hallmarks of a genuine Junghans including the centered setting knob and enclosed mainspring barrel. No modern hardware or adhesives were found within the movement or case. The crystal is absent. We do not see this model in catalogs or previous sales and the Junghans swing arm clock appears a bit big for the scale of the statuette. That said, there is another known swinging clock attributed to Junghans that has a dolphin figure very similar to this one.
