DESCRIPTION: France, mantel timepiece, 8 day, time only, spring driven brass movement with thread suspension in a stepped, molded brass base upon which stands the cast gilt figure of the goddess Athena holding a spear in one hand, the other hand holding a shield within which is set a silvered chapter ring with roman numerals, blued steel Breguet style hands.
CONDITION: the case is in very good condition with what looks to be original gilding. There is no rear cover for the movement as this clock once lived under a glass dome. Hour hand may be a replacement. Unsigned diminutive French movement is clean and has new thread. The Greek goddess Athena was associated with wisdom, strategic warfare, the arts, and trade. Minerva was the equivalent Roman goddess.
