DESCRIPTION:
John Rogers, New York, a small bronze bust of Abraham Lincoln by Gorham, New York founder, the pose very much like that seen in a contemporary photograph by Matthew Brady, the president seemingly deep in thought, the well modeled figure mounted to a round, black granite base with beveled edge, and signed "John Rogers, New York". John Rogers (1829- 1904) was an American sculptor, best known for his plaster casts of genre scenes, known as "Rogers Groups". The fact that they could be reproduced easily made them much more affordable to the middle class, earning him the title of the "peoples sculptor". His work in bronze is far less common than his plaster casts. His three bronze castings include "Pickett's Charge", "One More Shot" and this bust of Lincoln.
