CONDITION: Mahogany case in very nice condition in original finish with some scratches at the latch knob on the side of the case. The railing on the top of the case appears to be original, but could be a replacement as these cases normally had a carved gilt eagle. There is loss to the gilt corner spandrels on the dial glass. Lower glass is original. Decorative brass balls on the bottom bracket are tarnished. Original painted dial is fine along with the hands and finials. Ht 14.5"

CONDITION: this clock is in excellent original condition with replaced weight baffle. Richard Owens, the consignor, claims this kept time for a Turkish bath in Baltimore for 80 years. The high quality movement has Geneva stop works and counter balanced hands. This is a very rare model and the first we have sold at R. O. Schmitt Fine Arts. CONDITION: case was originally gilded, now polished to brass. Retains original embossed and gilded cylinder platform (bat wing balance weights), with center seconds hand. Porcelain dial is signed Boyet Freres, and his town, Fluerier, all fired in and still legible; he was the retailer. Movement is signed Japy Freres, with Gold Medals for 1825 through 1845, serial # 4337. Feet are actually cast nuts which hold the case together. There is one very fine hairline in the center of the alarm circle; otherwise dial is fine, and the hands are original. Ht 8"

CONDITION: on the rear access door, the screws for the bottom hinge have gotten lost; door latch still intact. The movement is signed by the maker, Vincenti and with his silver medallion award for the year 1855, plus serial #3761, and also with the imprint of Tiffany & Comp'y, and the dial similarly signed and with the city New York showing above 6. The decorations on the Neuchatel style case are still brilliant and all the ormolu trim is intact. Ht 20"

Ball, Co. JEWELERS, CLEVELAND.O." has been restored. The movement is stamped Webb C. Bal with a normal Graham style deadbeat verge where the crutch rides against one side of the pendulum rod, held there by gravity. The mercury in the nickel plated pendulum tubes has been replaced with steel shot and functions perfectly. The nickel weight and nickel pulley, door latch, beat scale and pendulum are original. These are outstanding timekeepers and examples were used in the Naval Observatory in Washington DC. There is also an example is in the Massachusetts Governor's mansion. Ht 72"

DESCRIPTION: New Haven Clock Co., New Haven, Conn,, standing jeweler's "Regulator No. 4" 8 day time only weight driven movement with lyre / grid iron pendulum in walnut case with burled walnut highlights and white porcelain dial with sweep seconds, c1885
CONDITION: although New Haven made these giants to compete with Ansonia and Waterbury, they didn't sell that many, and they are hard to find. There are some remains of original finish, however, most of the case has been steel wooled, then over-coated and rubbed to a nice sheen. It has a very mellow caramel color. There are some extra holes in the back of the clock from screwing it to the wall, and some of the holes have been filled with doweling and sanded off, stained to match {see close up image}. The movement is clean, re-strung and running. Note the very top carved shell, about 4" has been newly carved; balance of top is old, and 3 "feet" have been added to help stabilize it to the case. This is an exceptionally tall clock and is very impressive. Includes an extra, purpose made base to convert the clock to a wall model. Ht 10' 2" as shown, or as a wall model it totals 95"

CONDITION: basically this model later became the Ansonia No. 1 Extra, Crystal Palace. This one retains its original Davies dial (his name imprinted at lower edge) and was merchandised by Davies before he sold out to Ansonia (about half his label remains on rear). The paper dial is stained and someone applied little decals in an effort to improve it, long ago and even the decals are worn. The reclining cherub pendulum is a later addition. Chris Bailey and I looked this clock over in detail and feel certain it would have had a barrel style pendulum. On walnut base with dome; height, to top of dome, is 19.5".

Some of the original finish remains on the sides of the case, shellacked over; the front rounds have some veneer repairs and some losses, especially along the bottom edge. Retains a clean label, and good early "Lyre" gong base. Movement complete and sound, ticks but would benefit from service. The brass dial is signed "Shipman Norwich" with moon phases, second hand, and calendar above 6, c1790
CONDITION: the case has its original finish nicely rubbed down with split above of rear right foot on restored with new bracing and high quality dovetailed craftsmanship on plinth. Note it is likely the plinth was cut down at some time to allow standing the clock in a short celing, then the bracket and tall feet were later crafted to disguise the loss. There is a repair on the cutout crest and a restoration to age crack on hood door. The well engraved brass dial is in good condition with slight darkening (could stand re-silvering). The weights are a replacement and the pendulum is original. Shipman was apprenticed to the famous clockmaker Thomas Harland also of Norwich, Connecticut. This movement has the unique Harland-style plate pillars. Ht 89"

DESCRIPTION: Italian, Giovani Scherlino, Torino, (Patent holder) novelty sector clock, with snap back hand action at 12 o'clock, C.1930.
CONDITION: the original movement is heavy and well made with lever 'scape and brushed plates. The dial, which in many respects represents the entire clock, has some rust, some chips and fading/ wear. The artwork for the dial was done by a firm in Milan, looks like G. Ranci [on right margin]. The left margin of the dial bears the name of the inventor, repeated on the rear dust cover. The seconds hand is absent. Sector display watches and clocks have come and gone over the last 2 centuries, as taste has changed. This is a very interesting example that we have not seen before and is in generally good original condition. Ticks and stops; duration seems to be around a couple of days. Everything present is original. Ht 9 1/2"

The dial with royal blue numerals on fired porcelain cartouches. Original name on dial not legible, however Paris can be read. Case components bear 3 letters L.L.A., c1870
CONDITION: overall excellent original condition, except for an old replacement pendulum. There was perhaps a spear in the cherub's hands ?
