DESCRIPTION: Riley Whiting, Winchester, Conn., 30 hour time and strike weight driven wood movement half column & splat shelf clock, c1830
CONDITION: mahogany veneered case in good condition in a very old finish with some repairs to the door veneer. Turned maple columns are very unusual to find on clocks made by common maker. You are more likely to find them on clocks made in Massachusetts or New Hampshire. They are old and could be original or someone found a case and made the columns and splat. Unusual print applied to glass looks to be original and Riley Whiting used this type of tablet more than any other Conn maker, even though the case is not typical of Whiting cases. Several makers were doing this, but they tend to be portrait tablets. Painted wood dial is pretty good with some wear. Hands are period. Movement is correct for this maker. Part of the cap on the left chimney is broken off. The feet behind the paw feet are replaced. Ht 27.5"
