Howard & Davis, Boston, "No. 2 Banjo" wall timepiece, 8-day weight driven in a walnut case, C.1855
CONDITION:
it appears this clock was grained over the walnut originally, as there are remains of rosewood graining. The clock was refinished and restored in 1964, a note to attest glued inside the case. An additional 19th century note indicates the clock hung in the office of the pres. of the B & O Railway. Note the old iron weight is a replacement from something else, but certainly operates the clock. Pulley is not original. Tie down tab for pendulum is lacking. The original paper over zinc dial is faded and has perimeter losses around the attaching holes and latch areas. Signature on dial is weak but legible. Movement is signed. Throat glass is orig; bottom glass is replaced. Clock runs OK. Ht 43.5"

Ted was kind enough to apply a label to virtually all of his clocks, and to sign them in ink as well, making it easy for us to document them. This one is serial #46. Although we have not sold one since Nov 2002, our friends at Skinners, Inc, sold one Feb 15, 2009 (just last year) for $9480. Simon and Aaron Willard perfected this model clock in the late 1790s, and originals are on display at Boston's Museum of Fine Art, Old Sturbridge Village and also New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Their design is discussed in detail in "A Study of Simon Willard's Clocks", by Husher and Welch (1980), pgs 7-30. overall excellent original condition. We checked with Campos & Hynes today and their price for the next lyres made will be over $4000. This particular lyre was part of the first batch that Foster made after Stennes' death in 1975. It has a Kilbourne & Proctor movement stamped with a single line, block letter signature "F.S. CAMPOS", which Bobby Hynes confirms was his earliest stamp. This clock is signed on the dial, case, weight and movement [4!], and is a very nice example of Campos' work. Ht 41.5"

Seth Thomas Clock Co., REGULATOR No. 12, fine quality timepiece in a Victorian walnut case with hounds tooth trim along the top, 8-day, weight movement with jeweled pallets, c.1881

this case has had some restoration over the years. On the top the two outer diamond shaped pieces are replaced, along with one or 2 of the smaller pieces. The mercury jar is a replacement, and needs one slightly larger in diameter. The movement itself is in excellent condition, running briskly, and the engraved silvered dial is very good, lacquer slightly discolored; it would benefit from re-silvering. The nickel finish on the movement is excellent; light reflections look odd to the camera, but it is really fine. With 3-jar mercury pendulum [nickel finished metal jars], and with dead beat escapement, Geneva stopwork and maintaining power. Weight descends left side of case. See condition for provenance.

the heavy and well made mahogany case retains original finish, finials and hardware. Note that this movement is set in beat by turning thumb screws attached directly to the anchor, and has very fine wheelwork throughout. The case back has 4 holes that were used for screwing it solidly to the wall. Mr. F. C. "Buck" Dumaine, Jr., railway magnate and director of Amsokeag Co, purchased the assets of Waltham Clock Co. around this time, and ordered this special regulator. He gave it as a gift to E. S. French, and a silvered brass plaque on the front door dated 1940 affirms that gift. On Frenchs death in 1968, the clock was returned to Dumaine, still director of the Amoskeag Co. It hung in the Amoskeag Offices in the Prudential Building for 26 years and was purchased from Mr. & Mrs. Dumaine {receipt signed by both} in 1994, before her death in 1996, & Buck Dumaine's death in '97. CONDITION:
this clock spent the last 50 years on Cape Cod, and we were pleased to have the opportunity to sell it. Although there have been some minor restorations over the years....these include moving the susp hanger twice when the susp spring broke (note extra holes shown in detail foto), a repair to the escutcheon for key-lock at the top of the center panel {bottom one has never been moved}, and the dial re-silvered. There is slight damage at the bottom of the lead-filled pendulum where it meets the rating nut. Rear iron case hanger for the clock is original, also unusual pulley with curved spokes. We note the weight touches the pend rod about 4" from its top limit, and it may /? have been changed. Mov't mounts on two heavy brass corbels that are screwed to the back of the case. Original brass ring reinforces the "head" and accepts the dial. Ht 53.5"
