CONDITION: the elaborate case is complete but the black paint is worn, the top leans a bit, and the gold has been over painted on the lyre and column capitols. The square two spring driven movement, with thread suspension, strikes a gong. There is a groove in the base for a glass dome (not present), and these usually had a turned wooden cover behind the movement, which is absent. Ht 21"

He was a resident of Barre, Mass. by 1885 and carried on a jewelry business until his death Apr. 30, 1917 at Barre.

The label states the movement made by Ephraim Downes has brass bushings, but the one inside this case does not. These clocks were assembled in Virginia to avoid the tax and many used whatever movements they had on hand despite what the label states. Richmond clocks are scarce and historically interesting. CONDITION: The clock has a very attractive mahogany case which has been refinished. The movement is signed and the hands are original. The dial is original with minor paint loss at the screw holes. The top glass and bottom glass both appear to be original with the bottom glass showing some lifting and flaking. There is a nice label inside the case. Yet another example of this scarce model similar to the one shown in Bailey's "Chauncey Jerome NAWCC Supplement No. 15", pages 70-71. It appears the brass bushed movement is German silver which Jerome used on a very few clocks in the early 1840's. Ht 20.75"
